Neighbors rally for affordable housing

The boom in condominium developments around the Chicago area has been welcomed by many but has also left many longtime Chicago residents without affordable housing.

Members of Northside P.O.W.E.R. met last Friday to hold a prayer vigil on the corner of Morse and Greenview Streets.

The group held signs demanding more affordable housing in the Rogers Park area as well as many other neighborhoods around the north side of Chicago that have seen apartment buildings converted into luxury condominiums.

Residents living in these apartment buildings have often been forced to find housing in other parts of the city and even in the suburbs due to the decline in rental units around the city.

According to a development by the Lakeside Community Development Corporation, condo conversions around Rogers Park have led to the loss of nearly 1,000 affordable rental units per year in the neighborhood.  Neighbors are calling for more responsible development that focuses on providing enough affordable housing for longtime residents.

However, as sales slow down, many buyers are starting to find deals on Chicago Homes For Sale that haven’t been seen in years.  Browse through the best properties today and find the home of your dreams.
