New rating system in place for LEED certified homes

The push for environmentally friendly developments has led to a new program to rate new single-family homes built with new environmental technologies.

The U.S. Green Building Council has begun a new rating system known as LEED for homes.  The program was announced at the recent Chicago conference, Greenbuild, which brought together industry experts from around the country.

LEED certification takes in account several factors in the construction of new homes and condominium projects.  Water savings, energy efficiency, waste reduction during the construction process, and the use of recycled building materials are all factors in a development’s score on the point system.

Developments are awarded a platinum, gold, and silver rating according to the number of points earned.

Some of the newest Chicago Homes For Sale feature environmentally-friendly designs and energy saving features that promise to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and energy usage that could prove key in the fight against global climate change.  Consumers are increasingly looking for these types of features when it comes time to find a new home or condominium.
