South Chicago has long been known as the rust belt of the city.
Developers are now eyeing the neighborhood for a major new project that will replace the decaying factories with residential developments that offer the latest in green technology.
Sixty-five lots located next to the former site of U.S. Steel will be turned into a mix of housing, retail districts, and parks in one of the most ambitious new development plans in the city.
Aspen SCG LLC, Courtyard Flats LLC, Claretian Associates, and Chicago Lakefront LLC are working on plans to develop homes that meet LEED standards for energy savings and environmentally sound policies.
The city has approved the plans for many of the parcels, and the final sale of the vacant land should be completed by next year.
The South Chicago project is the first neighborhood project to be part of the U.S. Green Building Council’s new initiative focusing on neighborhoods.
Until now the group has focused on industrial and commercial development around the country.
The development will take several years to complete. Keep up to date on the latest news for new Chicago Homes around the city.
